Hosted by the Estonian Business School, the program combined lectures, company visits, and exchange formats, offering a direct perspective on how a highly digitalized economy translates vision into practice. For our Goethe MBA students, the week began with a welcome session, followed by lectures and workshops. A guided tour through Tallinn’s Old Town provided an initial cultural and historical orientation before the group came together for a joint dinner in the city center.
Exploring Estonia’s Digital Society
A key focus of the program was Estonia’s digital infrastructure. At E-Estonia, participants gained insights into the country’s e-governance systems and the foundations of its digital public services. The group then visited Ülemiste City to explore how urban development and business ecosystems come together in a modern “smart city” environment.
Midweek, the academic exchange continued at EBS with lectures and workshops on contemporary business and innovation topics. A visit to ÄIO highlighted deep-tech innovation, with a focus on sustainable solutions in food and materials, and how research is translated into scalable applications.
The entrepreneurial side of Estonia’s ecosystem became especially visible in the second half of the week. A visit to Swedbank offered insights into the financial sector in a digitally advanced economy. At Wise Guys, participants learned about start-up development and funding structures, complemented by a spontaneous exchange on entrepreneurial pathways. A visit to a local brewery rounded off the day, showing how digital technologies are increasingly integrated into modern production processes.
From Ideas to Encounters: Start-up Culture in Action
The final program day included a visit to Lift99, a well-known start-up community space in Tallinn. The visit provided further exposure to the local entrepreneurial environment and the collaborative culture within Estonia’s start-up scene. The week concluded with an informal evening gathering at a local billiard café, offering space for reflection and informal exchange among participants.
Once again, the study trip offered a comprehensive perspective on Estonia’s digital society and innovation landscape. By combining academic learning with real-world exposure, the program illustrated how digital transformation is embedded across public institutions, established corporations, and entrepreneurial ecosystems alike, making Estonia a unique environment for observing the future of digital economies in action.
