Regulators worldwide are increasingly mandating sustainability reporting, and demand for sustainability information from investors and stakeholders is rising. Affected companies potentially face a diverse set of reporting requirements and related data points that they are required to disclose. This class will equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the complex landscape of sustainability reporting and its implications for managerial decision-making, with a particular focus on the European context. In doing so, we will cover the following topics:
- Introduction to sustainability reporting frameworks
- Use of sustainability information for investment decisions
- Standardized sustainability reporting under ESRS and Taxonomy Regulation
- Benchmarking of companies’ sustainability information
- Analysis, interpretation, and use of sustainability information
- Know the regulatory framework(s) governing sustainability reporting for EU companies
- Have a comprehensive understanding of the standardized reporting requirements of the ESRS and the Taxonomy Regulation
- Navigate companies’ sustainability reports, distill key KPIs, and extract decision-relevant information
- Critically discuss how companies’ sustainability reports reflect their actual sustainability matters
- Assess the managerial implications of (mandatory) ESG reporting

Prof. Dr. Katharina Hombach
Prof. Dr. Katharina Hombach has been a Professor of Financial Accounting and Corporate Governance at Goethe University Frankfurt since October 2022. Previously, she held professorships at Carl-von-Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (2020-2022) and Frankfurt School of Finance & Management (2017-2020). She earned her Dr. rer. pol. from WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in 2017 and holds an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics (2011) and a B.Sc. from the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management (2010). Her research focuses on corporate transparency, disclosure regulation, and targeted transparency. She has published extensively in respected journals, with recent work exploring sustainability reporting standards, climate reporting, and the effects of financial reporting regulations.
