BANK MANAGEMENT

Understanding the function of banking in the financial system is of fundamental importance in theoretical economics and finance. The Global Financial Crisis of 2007-08 underscored the important role of banks in the economy. Efficient channeling of savings into productive real economy activities is crucial for growth and general welfare. Banks also create liquidity for the public on the balance sheet by transforming illiquid assets such as loans into relatively liquid liabilities such as transactions deposits, and off the balance sheet by transforming loan commitments and similar claims to liquid funds. Additionally, banks monitor, manage, and distribute risk, such as credit, interest rate, foreign exchange, and liquidity risk, for the public through diversification and intermediation on the balance sheet and through derivatives transactions off the balance sheet. In recent years, changes in the economic environment and regulation, along with technological change and financial innovation, have altered the banking industry, and bank management expertise is in high demand.

This course studies key concepts and issues in bank management. It highlights current challenges in banks’ business models by reviewing the changes from the era of the financial crisis, the regulatory response, up towards today’s innovation and digitization focus. Based on a sound introduction to banks’ roles, governance, products and business lines and its mirroring in their balance sheets and risk management practices you will work on case studies on, e.g., ECB requirements for bank licensing, lessons from banks near failure in the financial crisis, or banks’ risk and disclosure reports. The course concludes with the current transformation of banks’ business models towards digitization, including a description of banks’ innovation management processes and formats for collaboration with startups.

The course consists of lectures, class discussions, group assignments and case studies. Prior exposure to the banking sector is helpful but not a requirement. A high level of preparedness and participation, however, is essential to ensure that the course is a rewarding experience for all participants.
