This module combines legal, technical, and managerial perspectives to examine the core principles of data protection and cybersecurity in digital business environments. The data protection part focuses on the GDPR and related European and national regulations governing the processing of personal data, including legal requirements, individual rights, and organizational compliance obligations. It highlights key challenges at the intersection of law and technology, including links to emerging regulation such as the EU AI Act. The cybersecurity part introduces information security and its management from a managerial and compliance perspective. Students develop an understanding of core legal and security issues and learn to assess basic data protection problems through applied case studies.

Prof. Dr. Thilo Goeble
Dr. Thilo Goeble has worked as an Officer at the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information since 2021. He joined the Digital Transformation MBA as a faculty member in 2018, while working as a Research Associate at the Chair of Public Law, IT-Law, and Environmental Law at the University of Kassel. Between 2013 and 2015, he was a Research Associate at the Chair of Public Law, IT-Law and Legal Informatics at the University of Passau. His work focuses on legal aspects of data protection, IT law, and the regulation of digital technologies.
Kirstin Scheel
Kirstin Scheel is a research fellow at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT / National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE and holds an MSc in Corporate Strategy and Governance from Nottingham University Business School. Her research focuses on cybersecurity and privacy protection for smart cities and smart regions. Prior to that, she worked for years in applied data protection and in project and process management across different industries. She combines research and practical experience in data protection and cybersecurity.
Dr. Stephan Schindler
Dr. Stephan Schindler has been a member of the Goethe Business School faculty since 2018 and is a Research Assistant at the Department of Public Law, IT Law, and Environmental Law at the University of Kassel. His work focuses on research projects related to automated video analysis, forensic person search, and cooperative systems for data evaluation and archiving. Previously, he worked at the University of Passau (2012–2015) at the Chair of Public Law, IT Law, and Legal Informatics, where he contributed to projects on biometric and video-based forensic systems.
