“Sustainable Business and Investing” will address the implementation of sustainability strategies into general business and specific investment decisions. Incorporation of sustainability aspects into business making is not only required by regulators worldwide, but helps to mitigate long-term and often extreme risks and caters to customers’ and investors’ demands.

The class will cover the origins of the global sustainability movement, the development of corporate sustainable strategies a good understanding of the various ESG-related risks and opportunities and examples for implementing these strategies. In addition, the class will present the relevant regulatory developments, in the ESG-governance and finance implications. Participants will learn to assess firms based on their sustainability policy and evaluate sustainable investment strategies and financial products. Group discussions provide an opportunity to share insights with regard to the potential future development of sustainability on financial markets and its role for the stability of financial systems.

Course Format

This course is offered in the part-time Master in Finance program and may be attended on a “no credit” basis by individuals not enrolled in the program. Course participants are visitors who are not responsible for assignments and do not take an exam or earn academic credits. As the number of seats in the course is limited, we recommend to register online early.

Upon completion of this course, you will

  • know the main elements of sustainability strategies and understand the role of a sustainable corporate governance for implementing them
  • be able to apply the concept of double materiality in the complex field of ESG

  • know the main regulatory developments in the area of sustainability
  • have gained information on the role that sustainability plays for the stability of the financial system

Dr. Gerrit Jan van den Brink

Dr. Gerrit Jan van den Brink is working as advisor on ESG-, Risk Management, AI and Data. He is a lecturer at the Goethe University, Goethe Business School, the Dutch Actuarial Institute and the Hague University of Applied Sciences. Before he worked as CRO, CFO, Operations Director, Head of Operational Risk and Compliance and Auditor in the Banking, Life Insurance and Pensions sector in Germany, the Netherlands, UK and Ireland. Dr. van den Brink is a chartered accountant and holds a PhD of the Erasmus University Rotterdam.
