DATA PROTECTION & CYBER SECURITY

‘Data Protection’: This part of the course deals with the basic principles of data protection law (i.e., the laws regarding the processing of personal data). The course provides an overview on data protection law, in particular the GDPR, and addresses legal questions in national and European jurisdiction and legislation, as well as the link between law and technical challenges.

Personal data refers to information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person. The processing of personal data is essential for almost every part of today’s digitized economy. Entire business models are based on the collection and evaluation of large amounts of personal data.

The legislator has reacted to this and enacted laws that regulate the handling of personal data and protect the persons whose data is processed from undesirable consequences. The central regulation in Germany and Europe is the GDPR. The GDPR regulates the conditions under which processing of personal data is permissible, the rights of persons whose data is processed, and the measures the controller must take to ensure data protection-compliant processing. Violations can be sanctioned with high fines. Basic knowledge of data protection law is therefore mandatory in many business areas.

The main goal of the course is to foster consciousness of the legal framework and understanding of relevant and common questions related to data protection issues. The focus of the course is a practical approach to the relevant legal questions. The content will be, to some extent, taught based on plausible case law. At the end of the course, students will have the skills to judge basic legal problems related to the issue of data protection.

‘Cyber Security’: All organisations rely on information technology, related products and services. Where personal data is concerned there are increasingly strict legal requirements in place. However, with regards to the security of other information the situation varies. This part of the course is meant to give students a glimpse into the topic of information security and its management, both from a general management as well as a compliance perspective.

The course is composed of lectures, self-assessments, group work, and group presentations of case studies.
