Dear GBS Alumni and Students,
For the 7th time in a row, Goethe Business School students and alumni will participate in the annual Rolex MBA Regatta & Conference, organized by SDA Bocconi School of Management and Yacht Club Italiano. This prestigious event, with up to 400 students and alumni from worldwide top Business Schools, will take place in beautiful Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino from Thursday, September 29, to Sunday, October 2, 2016.
As every year, enthusiastic sailors and participants of previous years are most welcome to join the Goethe crew again! We would also like to offer individual slots to new GBS students and alumni to participate this year!
On the logistics side, the participation fee is approx. €500 per person, covering boat, harbor fees, receptions, gala dinner, entertainment, and merchandising. Costs for car pool ride, breakfast/lunch, insurance, and fuel are shared within the crew. Besides the regatta sailing (approx. 5-6h/day), party, and networking, there is good opportunity to explore the scenic beautiful area of Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure. Each year, we enjoyed the sun and daily swim.
Please send us a brief introduction about yourself and your sailing interest/experience; explain why you like teamwork, party and networking and how you would fit into the crew. We plan to finalize the crew by end of May, to allow team building, preparation, and getting to know each other.
We look forward to hearing from you,
Also in 2015 Goethe Sailing Masters participated in the world’s most popular MBA sailing event
The Goethe Sailing Masters crew met on a rainy Wednesday evening after work to drive to Milano, not only to escape to the sun for a long weekend, but to participate in the annual Rolex MBA Conference & Regatta in Santa Margherita Ligure.
In 2015, the crew consisted of three female and five male Goethe students and alumni of various nationalities, aged between 23 and 49, from Goethe Business School Executive MBA as well as Full-time MBA and Master in Finance classes 2007 to 2017 - a truly diverse crew.
For the 12th time since 2003 and for the 5th time with a Goethe team among the participants, the event took place in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy, and was organized by students from SDA Bocconi and the Yacht Club Italiano. Over 400 students and alumni from more than 20 top business schools from countries across Europe, Americas and Asia took part in the conference and sailing event.
After three days of daytime sailing and nightly network or celebration events, on the last evening, ahead of the gala dinner, a conference on “In search of equilibrium: Standing against the winds of an unpredictable environment” took place followed by the award ceremony.
Despite not all having sailed together as a crew previously, the Goethe crew demonstrated efficient teamwork during sailing, beating crews from Harvard, Insead, HEC or Duke in individual races. This was possible due to excellent leadership, team building, decision making and flawless execution, as learned and applied through the time at Goethe Business School.
The event was a lot of fun but also an excellent opportunity to promote the Goethe Business School and create awareness for the program amongst business leaders and other business schools' students and alumni while networking with them. The crew proudly displayed the Goethe logo on their polo shirts and flags.
We are very much looking forward to the participation of the Goethe crew in this event again in 2016. Please contact Thorsten Schopf (thorsten.schopf(at)gbs-alumni.com) with any questions.
The crew of 2015 thanks Goethe Business School for their support relating to this event.
Some impressions from 2015
Goethe Pirates 2014 in Santa Margherita, Ligure
Also in 2014 and for the second time in a row already, Goethe Business School (GBS) sent a team to the Rolex MBA Sailing Cup. A total of 16 students and alumni of the classes 2006 to 2016 from GBS and Duke, respectively, proudly represented GBS at the event which took place for the 11th time and was hosted by Bocconi Business School.
Goethe Sailing Masters got started with only a few sailing enthusiasts in 2013 but ever since the group of fans and team members has not ceased to grow. The initial goal of the founders Carola Wondrak (Bachelor WiWi) and Thorsten Schopf (GBS Duke Goethe EMBA 2007) to participate in the famous SDA Bocconi regatta together with a team representing GBS and Goethe University alumni seems to be reached more than ever. With one boat in 2013 and members for two boats in 2014, the community is growing strong.
No wonder – the team members were selected carefully to have a great spirit between the pirates on board. More than that, sailors were able to network with people from all the different Ivy League schools at dinner and the after party. After exhausting races, food, brain food, dancing and drinks were the perfect preparation for the following day.
For those who could not join the team, there is no reason to throw in the towel - the flags are hoisted on! All master students and alumni are invited to join!

Some impressions from 2014
We started in 2013
With the beginning of summer 2013, Goethe Sailing Masters, founded by Carola Wondrak (Bachelor WiWi) and Thorsten Schopf (GBS Duke Goethe EMBA 2007), were initiated. Initial goal of this initiative was to participate in the famous SDA Bocconi regatta together with a team representing GBS and Goethe University alumni.
Goethe Sailing Masters got started with only a few sailing enthusiasts but ever since the group of fans and team members has not ceased to grow. For those who could not join the team in fall 2013, there is no reason to throw in the towel - the flags are hoisted on!
Encouraged by the great spirit which bonded the sailors during their first joint event, the idea came to again participtae in the regatta the following year. Moreover, it is also planned to participate in a different regatta in spring. All bachelor and master students are highly welcome to join!
