Goethe University Frankfurt
1,200 years of free thinking.Throughout its history, Frankfurt has been a by-word for free thought, commerce and innovation. Its geographic location at the heart of Europe has made it a center for trade and the exchange of cultures and ideas since its inception in the last years of the 8th Century. Over the last 150 years, since the blossoming of Germany's industrial revolution, the city has stormed to international prominence, feted for its economic power and thought leadership alike.
The Goethe University was founded as a private educational institution in 1914 by Frankfurt's own citizens, during the first modern heyday of the city's commerical power. So the link between dynamic, research-driven academia and the conscious commitment of Frankfurt citizens to the fundamentals of international trade and industry is more than intimate. It is the very reason we exist. Today, Goethe University Frankfurt is one of the few German universities to boast true world-class facilities. More than 600 professors teach a wide range of subjects from A (African Language) to Z (Zoology) in 170 degree programs. Our international reach is clearly demonstrated through 140 bilateral agreements with distinguished institutions across Europe, as well as in the US and Canada, and state partnerships with nine universities in Australia.
Department of Economics and Business Administration
With 40 professors and 200 research fellows, the Department of Economics and Business Administration at Goethe University Frankfurt is one of the largest in Germany. The Faculty places a strong emphasis on the practical application of its research and connections with business. As evidence of this, many faculty members also act as consultants to financial institutions, industry and government, and hold directorships in a range of organizations. These close ties are also reflected in the fact that a growing list of companies have made the commitment to endow chairs. In addition, renowned business leaders support the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration as honorary professors.
The faculty of GBS have long been known for their ability to breed and train leaders. More faculty members currently teaching in German business schools received their degrees from Frankfurt than any other German institution. Goethe University is also the only university which employs two of Germany’s top 10 professors of economics.
